Hi, my name is Sarah Miller and I am a junior here at HPHS! This is my first year as a tutor in The Learning Center, but I have been going there to get work done or get help on homework since freshman year. I love that our school offers The Learning Center as a resource for students to help their peers with subjects they are struggling with, which is one of the reasons that I became a tutor myself. Another reason why I became a tutor is because I am able to tutor in any/all of the subjects that I feel that I strive in. One of my favorite subjects to tutor in is English, because I like that most of the time there is no true correct answer. I am able to brainstorm with the students I am tutoring and come up with ways they can improve their writing, without having to worry about explaining to them the “right” way of doing it. I especially like being an in-class tutor for English classes because I enjoy the discussions I have with the students I’m tutoring. I particularly like taking tips I’ve learned and advice I’ve received from past English classes and teachers, and sharing it with the students I am tutoring. Being a TLC tutor looks different for different students. For some being a tutor means going to The Learning Center during free periods or lunch and tutoring in subjects like math, science, and/or language classes. For other students, being a tutor means helping out as an in-class tutor. And yet, for others it’s a mix of both! For that reason, I would recommend that anyone becomes a tutor in The Learning Center!
Here's what Ms. Zoloto says about Sarah’s work in her class:
Sarah was such a great help in supporting my students through the letter writing process. She was patient and kind and the class felt very comfortable working with and sharing their personal stories with her. Congratulations, Sarah, for this well-deserved recognition of your work!
