My name is Brendan Chay, and I am currently a junior. I began tutoring at the beginning of this year, and, though I have less than one year of experience, tutoring has quickly risen to be an exceedingly enjoyable part of my day. Initially, I chose to become a tutor so that I could pass along my knowledge and experience in various subjects to those currently taking the class, and, in doing so, could help those who were struggling to understand a difficult concept. Thus, I would highly recommend that others consider becoming a tutor. It is a truly rewarding experience, and, aside from helping others, it allows one to remain up to date on skills and concepts that would otherwise be forgotten. My favorite subject to tutor is math because there is such a wide variety of topics covered throughout high school; nearly every tutoring session lends itself to a unique concept. Due to the fact that countless topics fall under the umbrella of math, mathematics tutoring sessions are a great way to brush up on forgotten skills. However, I would never turn down the occasional computer science tutoring session, as CS is the subject that I am truly passionate about.
For students who have never met with a tutor, here is some advice: First, do not be afraid to ask for help. Whether it is understanding the solution to a single problem, or wanting an explanation of a larger concept, the tutors in The Learning Center are there for a simple reason: to help those who require it. Second, a tutee should attempt the problem on his or her own before coming to The Learning Center. Doing so will allow a tutor to better understand which part of the problem is causing confusion, making the tutoring session more streamlined and personalized. Of course, if a tutee is entirely flummoxed and has no idea of how to even begin a problem, that is fine, as well. Overall, The Learning Center is a wonderful place for both those who tutor and those who want to be tutored, and I look forward to seeing you there — in either capacity — in the future.
Aside from tutoring, I am involved in the HPHS Robotics Club, where I am the co-captain and lead programmer of FIRST FTC Robotics team 6287, Vertigo. I love every aspect of robotics, from programming, to community outreach and spreading STEM, to leading the team. I also spend my free time programming, though I love reading — primarily fantasy novels — more than anything else.
What teachers are saying about Brendan:
Brendan has proven himself to be an incredibly reliable tutor. He does a fantastic job of asking students questions and modeling how to solve problems. Brandon’s explanations are very clear and students always walk away with a better understanding. He’s always willing to help out regardless of the subject. Brendan is a definite asset to TLC.
