My name is Hayden Schott. I'm currently a senior and this is my third year tutoring. For next year, I have committed to Washington University in St. Louis. Aside from school, I run distance year-round for cross country and track. The volunteering aspect of tutoring is what attracted me my sophomore year. Although it was sometimes difficult to help students older than me, I eventually became comfortable with the job and learned to love it. Tutoring has taught me some of my most important social skills, such as patience. Additionally, tutoring in the Learning Center gave me essential tutoring skills for tutoring outside of school as a paid job. Because of these benefits, I would highly advise other students to consider joining the community of tutors here. To those students trying to decide whether to come in and see a tutor, I just want to say that student tutoring offers the friendship and genuine connection that is not always available with an adult tutor.
What teachers are saying about Hayden:
Hayden has been an excellent contributor to the TLC. We are always impressed with his willingness to help any student in need- no questions asked! Hayden starts his tutoring sessions with thoughtful questions, taking the time to figure out the students’ needs. An important feature of an excellent tutor is helping the student develop confidence and independence. Hayden first asks his student to retrieve necessary materials for the class and encourages the student to build upon existing knowledge. His kindness is palpable—students feel comfortable working with him and benefit from his expertise. We are so lucky to have Hayden as a tutor!
