My name is Jack McCabe, and I'm a sophomore. This is my first year of tutoring at the TLC, but I've always enjoyed helping out my sister with school, so I've been tutoring her for years! I became a tutor mainly because I enjoy helping others, but I also know how bad it feels to struggle on a topic, and how good it feels to finally know that you get it, which everyone deserves to experience! "Everyone deserves a chance to fly" is a quote said by The Wizard of Oz in the play Wicked which I think is a great way of looking at tutoring, and it's a quote I take to heart whenever I help someone! I really enjoy tutoring math, specifically Algebra 2 with Trigonometry because it's a very strong subject for me, and I enjoy working through the problems presented in that class. Outside of tutoring, my main interests are riding my bike and my unicycle and wearing floral clothing! Being a tutor is really a great experience for anyone who is willing to help because it allows you to make new friends and help out fellow students! If you're meeting with a tutor in the TLC for the first time my advice to you would be to have fun with what your getting help with, because if you have fun with what your learning, you'll enjoy it much more!
Here's what Ms. Yoo had to say about Jack’s work in The Learning Center:
I love listening in on and watching Jack explain and articulate his thoughts, whether that is helping someone understand a math problem or analyzing literary characters. He is so keen, reflective, and patient. Even when he may disagree with you, he expresses that so respectfully and redirects kids to think about an idea or concept through another lens.
I also LOVE his style! He explained that he wears a lot of floral and tropical prints as a kind of homage to the state from which he grew up, Florida. And I love that his style and his person is unique and individual. It's so cool to see someone who embraces how he is special and different from others, rather than aspiring to conform. In this way, I think he is a great tutor and model for just being who he is: himself!
